The “Star of Chinese” Searches for Star in USTB

On May 3rd, 2013, the “Star of Chinese” – The 5th Chinese Proficiency Competition for Beijing International Students held an open audition in USTB, attracting 44 USTB international students to attend. Ms. Li Nan from the Beijing International Center for Chinese Language was present at the audition and offered guidance.

The audition consisted of four rounds. Each participant had altogether three minutes to show their Chinese proficiency. In the first round, participants each were given one minute to introduce themselves and to explain why they came to the audition. The second round required participants to create words with Chinese characters in 30 seconds. Round three was to list as many Chinese words as possible that belonged to the same word category in 30 seconds. For example, if one participant was asked to name several tourist attractions in Beijing, he was expected to list the Chinese names of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Beihai Park and the Summer Palace. In the fourth round, participants needed to make sentences based on the Chinese words given within 1 minute.

After the four rounds, ten participants stood out from the rest and won the title of “Star of Chinese in USTB”, they are: Motonari Go, Byambasuren Odmaa, Sakubu Sixte, Jacob Ilave , Iurtaeva Kseniia, Kim Il Hyok, Princilla Eka Putri, Choi Wonmin, Kim No Ul and Yun Kuk Hyon.

In addition to the first eight names above listed, another four participants also managed to advance to the preliminary contest which is to be held on May 11th, they are: Anton Svechkov, Eri Tokunaga, Tomoko Sugimura and Patrick Niezyimana.
