USTB Hosts Conference on Internationalization

On the morning of November 16, 2017, USTB hosted a conference on the topic of university internationalization. The conference was attended by Xu Tao, Director of the International Division of the Ministry of Education, Professor Yang Zhou, USTB President Zhang Xinxin, and Vice President Lu Zhaoping. Also present were over 100 participants from related colleges, departments, as well as teacher and student representatives.

Director Xu began by delivering a report entitled “Studying and Implementing the Spirit of the 19th Plenary Session of the Party for Planning and Opening Up to the Outside World”. Therein he detailed the strategic plan for opening up China’s education system to the world and new developments in the process. He described how since the 18th Plenary Session China had made great strides in opening up, training new talents, and introducing new and high-quality educational resources to its institutions. Furthermore China’s university system had grown to be ranked within the top levels globally through the process of educational reform. For future prospects it was important to take advantage of the “Belt & Road” Initiative and further deepen cooperation with other international institutions. Director Xu’s presentation was well received and most instructive for the university’s understanding of internationalization.

Vice President Lu then delivered a report on USTB’s internationalization efforts. He efficiently summarized the progress made in the field over the past years, as well as potential deficiencies and what tasks lay ahead for the university. He pointed out how USTB has made great strides in incorporating major national objectives in deepening efforts to found partnerships with other universities, forming a platform for student and teacher enrichment, all as part of the goal of further opening up to the world. However, he noted that there are still benchmarks to meet if USTB is to measure up to the world’s top universities. As such USTB will continue to strive to improve its training of top talents, contribute to society and the nation, expand its academic influence, and engage in cooperation with other top-tier universities around the world.

President Zhang then delivered his report. He said that while internationalization efforts were a core part of the university’s global strategy, it was not the end goal itself. Rather, such efforts constitute a part of USTB’s efforts for being a competitive international school. The goal of internationalization should be to serve three functions: the Party & state, the university’s objections, and the development of school staff & students. In the future USTB will aim to establish a platform for international cooperation and exchange for students and teachers, and encourage greater initiative on the part of university participants.

The conference was the second major conference held by USTB on internationalization after the 2009 “Working Conference on Advancing the Internationalization Strategic Process”, which helped to lay the foundation for USTB’s strategic planning in promoting a greater internationalization process.
