Admiring the Beauty of Nanjing: A Cultural Excursion to Suzhou for USTB’s International Students

From Nov. 26th to Dec. 1st, 2012, the Beijing International Education Exchange Center hosted the “Chinese Cultural Excursion to Suzhou Province for International Students from Universities in Beijing,” as a reward for the participants of the “2012 Mandarin Star Stage among International Students in Beijing” and the “2012 Chinese Debating Contest of International Students in Beijing.”

The tour was an opportunity for the international students to take in and understand the cultural diversity within China. The cultural excursion was attended by over 60 international students and teachers from 15 universities.

On Nov. 26th, Ms. Guo Kailin from the International Office led a team that consisted of Beninese student Hei Dali, Bolivian student Ke Yi, Bengali student Rui Jiangming and Mongolian student Dong Mamin from USTB to attend the cultural excursion. On the 27th, they attended historical and cultural lectures in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, at Nanjing Normal University. While visiting Zhong Huamen Castle, Fuzi Miao (Confucian Temple) and the Brocade Museum, students said that they felt as though they had travelled back to the time when Nanjing was still the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties in Chinese history. The students were also treated to some natural beauty as well, as they were shown the majesty of the Suzhou Gardens and Tongli, the region of rivers and lakes.

On Nov. 30th, an evening party was hosted for the international students to share what they had gained during the cultural excursion. The students performed dances, songs, short sketches and comic dialogues to demonstrate what they had learned from their experiences.

USTB students, specifically, showed their talents as well. Bolivian student Ke Yi sang “Jiang Nan,” a popular song in Chinese and Beninese student Hei Dali performed a comic dialogue.

The trip to Jiangsu province not only enabled international students to adopt a better understanding of Chinese culture and meet more friends, but also facilitated the networking and sharing of resources between the teachers from the 15 universities.
