On Dec. 10th, 2012, the award-giving ceremony “Beijing and I,” an essay contest among international students in Beijing, was hosted at the Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. Chen Gang, a member of the standing committee of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and leaders from the hosting organization were on hand to give out the awards to the 35 international students who had won the contest.
The goals of the contest were to inspire enthusiasm amongst international students for learning Chinese and to encourage them to study the development and culture of Beijing.
The contest spanned half of a year – starting in April and ending in November. There were 343 essays submitted, composed by 333 international students from 61 countries, representing 31 Beijing schools. The judges were experts and scholars invited by the hosting committee. In total, 5 first prizes, 10 second prizes, 20 third prizes and 65 honorable mentions were awarded in the contest.
Ms. Guo Kailin from the International Office, a representative of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, won an Excellent Organizer Award. MARIA DEL MAR GUINARAIS, international student from República de Guinea Ecuatorial, Beninese student AGAINGLO RODRIGUE and Brazilian student CASSIMIR O SANTOS JULIANDIO won honorable mentions in the contest.
