The Second Meeting of USTB-DMU Confucius Institute Meeting Held

On March 5, 2015, the second meeting between USTB and the De Montfort University Confucius Institute was held. The DMU representatives included Pro-Vice Chancellor & Dean of the Faculty of Technology Andy Collop, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Foreign Affairs James Gardner, Director of the International Office Stephen Wallis, and Director of the Strategic Cooperation Department Esther Dudley. They were met by USTB Party Secretary Luo Weidong, Vice-President Wang Ge, Confucius Institute President Peng Yi, and the Director of the International Office Guo Kanjun.
 
Secretary Luo began by greeting Prof. Collop and his colleagues, and expressed his pleasure at hosting the second meeting between USTB and DMU as well as his optimism for future collaboration between the two schools. Afterwards President Peng delivered a report on the CI’s activities and finances in 2014, and both sides agreed that work with the CI was proceeding smoothly and had laid down a good foundation for future activities. Future programs for 2015 were then discussed, including a jointly-run summer semester, the establishment of the Creative Industrial Technology Institute, a CI student grants plan, and the promotion of the 3+1 and 3+2 programs. The plans for a Confucius Institute College were also discussed.

After the meeting a ceremony was held where Pro-Vice Chancellor Collop was appointed as an adjunct-professor of USTB by Secretary Luo. Prof. Collop has a strong background in mechanical and civil engineering, and he plans to work closely with USTB students and contribute to the university’s cooperative research plans.
