Fourth USTB-DMU Confucius Institute Council Meeting Held

 On May 21st, USTB and De Montfort University (DMU) in the UK jointly held the fourth USTB-DMU Confucius Institute Council video conference. Prof. Andy Collop, Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute and Foreign Director of Confucius Institute, James Gardner, Vice President of Foreign Affairs, Mark Charlton, Minister of Public Affairs, Harriet Pole, Administrative Assistant of the Confucius Institute, Vice President Lu Zhaoping of the Confucius Institute, Director Liu Yaming, Guo Kanjun, Director of International Affairs, and Deputy Director Li Bei attended the meeting.

Director Liu Yaming first summarized the 2017 work of the Confucius Institute in terms of exchanges and cooperation between the two schools, Chinese language teaching, Chinese culture promotion, the international Chinese language test, the management system of the Confucius Institute, the integration of campus and community culture, and social influence. She then reported the work plan for 2018. In her report, she pointed out that in 2017 the Confucius Institute has made great strides in promoting cooperation and exchanges between the two schools, Chinese language teaching, and promotion of Chinese culture. In particular, the cooperation between the two schools has been increasingly strengthened. On the basis of mutual visits and lectures, doctoral training, and summer camps for students, the academic teams of the two sides have worked closely together to achieve breakthroughs in joint scientific research. The international project "Research on privacy protection in the Internet of intelligent medical care", an international project, which was jointly applied for by the team of Professor Ning Huansheng and the team of Professor Deda Chen Liming, has been financed by the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) and the Royal Society of England (RS).

The members of the two school councils unanimously agreed that the USTB-DMU Confucius Institute has achieved fruitful results in 2017, disseminated Chinese culture through Chinese language teaching and cultural activities, and opened up a window of understanding of China for the teachers and students of DMU and the citizens of Leicester. As a bridge between USTB and DMU, the Confucius Institute promotes mutual understanding and trust between the two universities and lays a good foundation for extensive cooperation between the two universities.

The two sides conducted in-depth discussions on the work plan of the Confucius Institute in 2018 and the medium and long-term cooperation strategies and measures of the two universities. The two sides will continue to rely on the Confucius Institute as a support and platform to further deepen inter-school cooperation, continue to hold summer camps, hold bilateral seminars featuring creative technologies, and expand the influence of the Confucius Institute. Lu Zhaoping specifically proposed that in the future, the two universities will further promote and implement more substantive cooperation projects, promote the exchange of high-level teacher-students, and make greater breakthroughs in joint response to the Belt and Road initiatives and joint scientific research, so that the two schools Cooperation is moving toward broader and deeper levels. Prof. Collop also proposed that he hopes to give full play to the role of the Confucius Institute in connecting the bridges, encourage the two-way interaction between the teachers and students of the two schools, and promote the win-win cooperation between the two schools. The two sides also held discussions on the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute.
