USTB President Visits Hokkaido University

From March 5th to 9th, a USTB delegation led by President Zhang Xinxin visited Japan for the 13thUSTB – HU Joint Symposium.

At the opening ceremony held at Hokkaido University on March 6th, HUPresident Dr. Yamaguchi delivered a speech, welcoming the delegation from USTB and reviewing the history of cooperation between the two schools in academic exchange, scientific research and student exchange. He said that Hokkaido University placedgreat importance on its friendship with USTB, its first cooperative partner in China, and expressed a desire to continue expanding and developingthispartnership.

Following President Sato, President Zhang made a speech on behalf of USTB. He thanked Hokkaido University for holding this seminar and hoped that this seminar would serve as a platform for academic exchanges that could extend the two universities’ cooperation into new areas.

The opening ceremony also invited teacher and student representatives to deliver speechesto the audience. They introduced their respective schools, with particular regards to the exchange programs available.

After the ceremony teachers and students held in-depth discussions on various issues such as research and academic development, and exchanged views with researchers at the Institute of Low Temperature and Collaborative Research Center.

Since they entered cooperative relations in 1986, USTB and Hokkaido University have hosted 13 symposiums, the development of which has brought along a wide range of student exchange programs and joint scientific researches. The symposium this time is by far the most extensive in terms of the fields of study involved, including metallurgy, materials science, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, computer science, and chemistry and more. Since 2006 USTB has sent a total of 72 exchange students, 20 graduate students sponsored by the government and 57 internship students to Hokkaido University for study and communication.
