USTB Opens a Window to the World

On May 17th, the ‘Open a Window to the World’ 2014 USTB International Students Cultural Festival was held at USTB. USTB President Zhang Xinxin visited the cultural exhibition in the company of his assistant and director of the International Office, Prof. Wang Ge.

Inside the exhibition booths were photos, fabric, costumes and tapestries; on the exhibition stands were crafts, brochures, drinks and food. International students were all dressed up with colorful and dazzling national costumes, as if celebrating the most important festival of their own nations.

President Zhang stopped by every booth, asking international students about their study and everyday life in USTB. He learned how to play ethnic instruments from these students and extended his gratitude to them for the excellent exhibitions. Students were excited to see the president as well. They introduced their own countries to him passionately and asked to take a photo with him. President Zhang also watched the performances of international students and expressed his congratulations on the successful holding of the culture festival.

Items on exhibition were either made and bought by students themselves or borrowed from embassies. The food took them a whole night to make with materials sent to them by relatives and friends back at their remote homelands. They love their nations and prided themselves on their own cultures and therefore were willing to share them with their Chinese friends.

The art performances of international students were extraordinary as well. African students performed passionate dances, students from Kazakhstan played the tambura, and Nigerian students sang The Five-starred Red Flag in excellent Chinese. Their performances received warm applauses and cheers from the audience.

With the aim to enrich the school lives of international students’ and to build a bridge between Chinese and foreign cultures, the International Office initiated the “International Students’ Culture Month”, an activity composed of the culture festival, cultural lectures and cultural visits. The lectures and visits will be held in the near future.
