Second Tata Steel Technology Leadership Program Held at USTB

On the morning of March 20, the opening ceremony of the second Tata Steel Technology Leadership Program was hosted at USTB. Attending the opening ceremony were President Zhang Xinxin as well as the heads and representatives from the Colleges of Metallurgy and Materials, State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials, State Key Laboratory of Advanced Metallurgy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology, and International Office. 15 middle-managers from Tata Steel participated in the program.

President Zhang delivered the welcome speech. He began by welcoming the participants, and talked about how as USTB’s specialized in the fields of metallurgy and materials, it had developed close ties with the iron and steel industry. He explained how USTB attached great importance to the advancement of scientific research, and was working to actively build partnerships with international enterprises, universities, and research groups. President Zhang continued by describing the important partnership between USTB and Tata Steel, and the joint-research platform that had been established to facilitate mutual benefit. Last year’s Leadership Program was discussed, and how the participants had engaged in intense discussions, putting forth new and innovative ideas, and President Zhang expressed his hope that this year’s program would have the same outcome.

Over the next week, representatives and professors from the Colleges of Metallurgy, Materials, Energy and Economics, the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials, State Key Laboratory of Advanced Metallurgy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology and other related departments delivered presentations to the Tata Steel participants on developments in China’s steel industry. Additionally the participants went on various tours, including at the National Research Center of Advanced Rolling. The training session helped to bring together experts from USTB and Tata Steel to discuss new innovations in steel technology.

USTB and Tata Steel formally established a joint research platform in June 2014, and held the first Tata Steel Technology Leadership Program in 2016 at USTB. The program is intended for middle-managers at Tata Steel to interact with Chinese experts and scholars in the Steel industry, and deepen relations between the two institutions. The ultimate goal is to promote the sharing of resources, advances in technological innovation, discuss technical challenges, and sustainability in the steel industry.
