On Oct. 30th, 2013 USTB held its Australian Open Day on campus, attracting Mr. Allan Morrell, Minister-Counselor with the Embassy of Australia, and delegates from Deakin University, Monash University, the University of Adelaide, the University of Queensland, the University of Wollongong and many other Australian universities, as well as around 200 USTB students. USTB chancellor Luo Weidong spoke with the delegates.
While delivering a welcome speech on behalf of USTB, Prof. Guo Kanjun, deputy director of the International Office, noted that USTB attached great importance to developing cooperative relations with foreign universities and had established close connections with numerous Australian counterparts. She hoped that the Open Day could further promote cooperation and exchange between USTB and Australian universities.
In the following speech made by Minister-Counselor Allan Morrell, he mentioned that Australia and China had great potential for cooperation because of their increasingly close educational partnership. With regards to the interest that Chinese students demonstrate for studying in Australia, counselor Allan Morrell expressed his hope that the Open Day activity could help to answer many questions for USTB students.
After speeches were delivered, delegates present at the event introduced their universities, providing information concerning each university’s schools and departments and overseas programs. In the ‘Open House’ section afterwards, they answered questions posed by students and communicated with them in person. Some universities convened meetings in the afternoon, further explaining their programs to receive graduate students sponsored by the Chinese government.
All universities showing up in the open day activity were high in the world rankings with regards to teaching and scientific research, including three top 100 G8 universities and two top 2% universities. This activity was an opportunity, not only for USTB students to build up their knowledge of Australian universities, but also for the school itself to expand on its cooperative efforts with its Australian partners.
