Samoa Minister of Communication Visited USTB

On June 9, 2015, the Minister of Communication Technology from The Independent State of Samoa, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau, along with a 7 person delegation visited USTB. President ZHANG Xinxin and Vice-president WANG Ge met the delegation, along with Director of the International Office GUO Kanjun and Director of the International Student Center, Zhao Liying. Both sides gave brief presentations and expressed their desire to engage in future collaboration.
 
President ZHANG said, as a cradle of Steel Engineer, USTB has become a leading interdisciplinary university in China after over 60 years development. In the past 60 years, USTB has become renowned for its metallurgy, materials, mining, and mechanical engineering disciplines, and it has contributed greatly to the field of research and its alumni occupy high-ranking positions throughout the steel industry. Meanwhile the university has engaged in many international cooperative efforts and currently has over 900 international students. USTB has begun recruiting Samoan students since 2008. There are total 9 Samoan students in USTB, major in computers, communications, engineering and other fields. President ZHANG concluded by expressing his hope that Minister Aveau’s visit would contribute to deepening relations between USTB and Samoa.
 
Minister Aveau thanked USTB for its warm welcome, and then spoke about how Samoa is currently focusing on developing its scientific base and how Samoan students all spoke favorably about studying at USTB. In 2014 two returning Samoan students had already achieved outstanding success in career. He ended by stating his desire that more students would enroll at USTB and that his country’s government would be able to deepen their relationship with the university.
 
After the meeting Minister Aveau met with Samoan students to discuss their studies and lives in China.
