De Montfort Confucius Institute Inaugurated

On March 19th, the Confucius Institute co-founded by USTB and DMU, had a grand inauguration on the DMU school campus. Mr. Shen Yang, Chinese counsellor of education to the UK, Prof. Luo Weidong, chancellor of USTB and Prof. Dominic Shellard, president of DMU, were present at the inauguration. This event attracted extensive attention from intellectuals, educators and the press in the city of Leicester.

Counsellor Shen congratulated the two universities on the successful establishment of the CI, expressing his confidence that this young institution would play an important role in stimulating Leicester’s economic growth and the China-UK educational and cultural communication.

President Shellard viewed the DMU-CI as an excellent interactive platform for teachers and students at DMU to learn the Chinese language and experience Chinese culture.

Chancellor Luo looked to the future. According to him, the communication and cooperation between USTB and DMU will go beyond Chinese language and culture to the field of creative science and technology; USTB and DMU will reinforce their cooperation in international education to provide a wider platform for the development of students’ individuality.

The first council meeting of DMU CI was held afterwards. In the meeting, the two universities reviewed the work of the CI in 2013 and discussed the institute’s 2014 medium and long-term development strategies. They signed a few cooperation agreements and exchanged views about co-establishing an international school of creative technologies.
