To deepen USTB international students’ understanding of Chinese culture Prof. Li Duan from the International Office led 20 students majoring in Chinese to attend the 2012 Beijing International Students cultural class – “Peking Opera,” sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and hosted by the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (NACTA) on Nov. 7th, 2012.
Prof. Zhang Yao, Dean of the Department of Peking Opera, NACTA, delivered a lecture for all of the attendees. He outlined the performance for the students, the “instruments” in the Beijing Opera and even let several students wear costumes and makeup – teaching them a few lines and moves in order to give the students the true experience of the opera. To conclude the show, students majoring in Beijing Opera performed several classic repertoires, such as Boating, Mounting and Dismounting a Horse and Divergence.
Enthusiasm was widespread as the international students immersed themselves in the class and actively participated in the class. The lecture concluded with laughter and applause. With this lecture, international students were given the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Beijing Opera. On their way back to USTB, many students expressed their determination to learn more about the “national gem” that is the Beijing Opera in the near future, to keep working hard on their learning of the Chinese language, and, of course, to continue immersing themselves in Chinese culture.
