USTB Student Rises to Become “Star of Chinese”

On June 15th, the final competition of the “Star of Chinese,” the 5th Chinese Proficiency Competition for Beijing International Students,was held at the University of International Business and Economics. 20 international students from 18 Beijing universities participated in the final. The competition selects10 “Stars of Chinese,” 10 “Second Prize” winners, 20 “Excellent Tutors”along with 15 universities as “Excellent Organizers.”

Having gone through the trials of the audition, the preliminaries and the semi-final, USTB international studentIlave Jacob from Papua New Guinea finally made it to the final where two final contests awaited him.

The first contest was called “Act It Out.” In this round, Jacob played an insurance salesman who intended to sell “sweetheart insurance” to an office workerplayed by Wu Shufen from the China Foreign Affairs University. The second round was a talent show in which Jacob and Kseniia, another international student fromUSTB,adapted the romance between Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty and his concubine Ms. Lee into a musical. Jacob’s performance was witnessed by more thantwenty students from USTB who showed up at the competition to cheer him on.

At the conclusion of the two rounds Jacob was awarded the second prize. In addition, USTB was named“excellent organizer” of the “Star of Chinese” competition and Ms. GuoKailin, Mr. Ilave’s coach, “excellent tutor.”
