“USTB International Year” – USTB Holds French Culture Appreciation Day

On May 29, as part of the “USTB International Year” series of activities, the university held the “Discover the Charm of France” event. Jointly organized with the French Higher Education Department, the event hosted educational and cultural activities to promote France. Also participating were representatives from the French Nantes Central Polytechnic University, Paris Political University, the French Institute of Higher Information, and 14 other French schools. Part of the event highlighted French food, movies and music, quizzes on culture, and displays set up not only to highlight French culture but also provide advice for students interested in studying abroad.

Mrs. Guo Kanjun, Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department of USTB, and Mr. Mathieu Ausseil, General Coordinator of the French General Education Department of the French Higher Education Department, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Director Guo pointed out that USTB has always attached great importance to exchange and cooperation with French universities. She continued by saying she hoped the day’s activities would deepen mutual understanding and trust amongst the participants and give them a greater appreciation of French culture. Mr. Mathieu said that the French Higher Education Department had a long history of promoting exchanges with foreign universities, and hope that the French cultural day would strengthen its ties to USTB. After the opening ceremony, representatives from the International Department and the International Student Center of USTB met with their French colleagues to discuss student exchanges, and other methods of cooperation.

Amongst the bright posters and music students met with representatives from various French schools. Representatives from the French Higher Education Department were on hand to help students with any questions they might have, and even conversed with them in Chinese. Several authentic French foods including cheese, wine, baguettes, and some desserts were available to introduce students to the wonders of French cuisine, which drew great enthusiasm. Overall the scene had a warm and friendly atmosphere, with students asking many questions about France and its culture.

In the afternoon, in order to help motivate USTB students to consider studying abroad in France, members of the French Higher Education Department gave presentations on the benefits and potential locales for student exchanges. Afterwards students were shown the popular Caesar-award winning film “Diplomacy”, directed by Bertrand Tavinier.

Amongst those attending the event were Mr. Nicolas Poncet, Head of the Guidance and Promotion Department of the Beijing Center for Higher Education, Director Zhao Liying of the International Offices, etc.
