Fall 2017 Taiwanese Class Arrives at USTB

On September 9, 28 Taiwanese exchange students arrived at USTB to begin their semester abroad. On the morning of September 11, the USTB International Office held a welcome ceremony with staff and teachers to begin enrolling the exchange students.

The initial meeting was geared towards helping students prepare for everyday life with discussions on traffic regulations, communication, medical issues, dining, elective courses, using the library, and other issues, concluding with a Q&A session. After the meeting, the students reported to their respective schools according to their majors.

This semester 28 students from 9 universities in Taiwan are attending USTB. Exchange students will benefit from our universities “one to one” system, where they are paired with a USTB student to help them adapt more quickly. Additionally, USTB has sent 59 students to 18 Taiwanese universities for study. This exchange reflects the strong ties between USTB and its Taiwanese partners, as well as the mutually beneficial study abroad programs we share.

In order to help the Taiwanese students, on September 17 at 3:00 pm they met to participate in a number of orientation activities that were hosted by the USTB International Office and the Hi World student association.

Before the activity commenced the International Office discussed aspects of campus life and safety with the students.

Despite the day’s hot weather, the student’s enthusiasm was undiminished. Everyone showed excitement and anticipation for the event, raising lots of questions and hoping to do well. The students listened attentively to the referee as the rules were explained, and upon dividing into their groups, eagerly took off on their scavenger hunt as the activity commenced. While some students were able to use their map well and quickly make progress, others showed some initial confusion. Some sought the help of others and began making progress as well, and after an hour when the last student filled their card, the group was both sweaty and happy with the results. The top performing students received certificates of achievement from the International Office.

The activity helped to better acquaint the new students with the USTB campus layout. Now knowing where different administrative and teaching buildings are located, they have developed a greater understanding of their new home for the semester.
