14th USTB & HU Academic Symposium Held
Vice President Wang delivered the opening speech on behalf of USTB and welcomed the visiting Hokkaido University delegation. She discussed the 30 years of friendship between the two universities, and how since 1986 USTB and Hokkaido University have deepened cooperation through student and faculty exchanges and discussions. She concluded by expressing her hope that the delegation would enjoy their visit to Beijing. Hokkaido University Vice President Hiroaki thanked his hosts, and spoke about the history of exchange between the two universities in terms of communication, academic research, and student exchanges. He concluded by expressing his hopes that such exchanges would continue and increase. Following the opening speeches President Zhang presented a ceremonial gift to the Hokkaido University delegation on behalf of USTB.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the partnership between USTB and Hokkaido University. Director Guo Kanjun of the International Office reviewed the history of the two universities, and discussed how they should take advantage of current and future opportunities to deepen cooperation. She also praised Hokkaido University for developing a high reputation for excellent teaching and research. The Dean of the College of Engineering gave a detailed report on the university’s engineering accomplishments, and discussed ways with which to further collaborate with USTB. Afterwards two student representatives from each university shared their own experiences and impressions of their time studying abroad.
In the afternoon the participantsbroke into smaller sub-forums to discuss the topics of materials, chemicals, mechanical engineering, and information technology. Scholars from bother universities in the fields of materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, information science and technology, chemistry, automation, etc. came together to discuss and exchange their views. In the afternoon the Hokkaido University delegation visited the USTB College of Earth Sciences, Institute of Technology, and the State Key Laboratory of Materials. As part of the Symposium 31 students from both schools delivered presentations on their own scientific achievements.
Since first establishing a partnership in 1986, USTB and Hokkaido University have alternatively held 13 academic symposiums, which have expanded cooperation and led to the development of the student exchange program and research collaboration. Since 2006 USTB has sent over 80 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, and 70 faculty members to Hokkaido University on short-term exchange programs.
