USTB Chancellor Visits Partner Universities

From May 23rd to May 30th a delegation led by Chancellor LuoWeidong, visited USTB’s European partners De Montfort University, the University of Dundee and the Université Paris-Sud.

One of the primary purposes of the visit was to discuss the recently established Confucius Institute for Creative Industry and Technology at De Montfort University.The trip also served to further promote USTB’srelationswith its partner universities, with the intention of expanding onstudent and faculty exchanges as well as joint research projects.

Chancellor Luo and Prof. Dominic Shellard, Vice Chancellor of De Montfort University, reached an agreement that the Confucius Institute would be opened in September 2013. In honour of the event, celebrations will be held at the opening ceremony that would put Chinese culture on full display. Both parties also saw the establishment of the Confucius Institute as an opportunity to expand on their relationship. USTB and DeMontfort stated their intentions to hold morejoint seminars in the near future with the goal of promoting the development of scientific research programs on both sides and strengthening collaborative effortsin creative design, environmental technology andcommunity services. At De Montfort, the USTB delegation also visited the Faculty of Technology, the Center for English LanguageLearning and the future site of the Confucius Institute.

During his visit to the University of Dundee, Chancellor Luo was received by Prof. Margaret Smith, Vice-ChancellorofInternational Affairs. Both universities began the day by stating the value that they place in their ongoing international partnership. Chancellor Luo used the opportunity to visit USTB students who were on exchange to the University of Dundee through the “3+1+1” program. The program was introduced in 2009 and gives students the opportunity to go abroad andstudy subjects such as engineering and management, earning accreditation from both USTB and their university overseas. The program is available for all levels of students, from undergraduates to PhDs. Students aren’t the only beneficiaries of the program either, as faculty arealso given the opportunity to participate in the exchange. After the meeting between the two chancellors, the USTB delegation visited laboratories of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Environmental Engineering.

At the Université Paris-Sud, the two universities discussed the “3+3” joint training program, the double-degree program for postgraduate students and prospects of having students from theUniversité Paris-Sudstudy at USTB. The relationship between USTB and Université Paris-Sudbegan with an agreement signed in 2012. Under the agreement, the two universities exchange faculty and students to participate in research projects. So far, USTB has accepted 11 students from the Université Paris-Sud to participate in laboratory studies. On this occasion, both sides expressed their wishes to further strengthen their cooperative efforts in joint training programs.
