International Offices Holds Chess Master Event

          On the evening of June 16, the "USTB International Year Activities - Chess" event was held on campus. The event was attended by Chinese Chess Association Deputy Secretary-General Zhu Yuehan, Vice President of Beijing Chess Academy and Chess Master Zhang Qiang, and USTB International Office Director Zhao Liying.

       Zhu Yuehan, Deputy Secretary-General of China Chess Association, welcome the guests and international students in his speech. He hoped that in the future he will establish more in-depth cooperation with USTB as a bridge to show the charm of chess to the international students, and to promote the chess movement and spread of Chinese traditional culture more widely.

       Director of the Center for International Students Zhao Liying expressed her gratitude to the USTB international students for their interest in learning about Chinese chess, and spoke about the development of campus culture through such events. She hoped that through the study of Chinese chess, students would gain a greater appreciation for Chinese culture; additionally that all involved would work together for the goal of promoting culture and mutually cooperation.

       Chess master Zhang Qiang then delivered an interesting lecture to the more than 100 students, interacting with them to help them easily understand the basic functions and basic rules of chess pieces. Combining his presentation with practical demonstrations, he provided a comprehensive overview of the development process of chess, basic techniques and its cultural connotations.

       Later, Master Zhang played chess simultaneously with 10 students, taking turns to move to each board. At the end each student was presented with a certificate of accomplishment and posed for a picture.

       The "USTB International Year Activities - Chess" event was part of a series of year end activities planned for USTB’s international students. The event not only provided them with information on the cultural background of chess but also showed them how fun it was to play. It is hoped that the students will now become enthusiastic chess players and share it with others in the future, ultimately spreading a Chinese cultural icon and building stronger international ties between China and other countries.
