USTB and Tohoku University Celebrate the Past and Look Forward to the Future

After over half a year of elaborate planning and preparatory work, the Tohoku University Day at USTB was finally hosted with great success in USTB’s Conference Center on Dec. 7th, 2012. Prof. Susumu Satomi and Prof. Toshiya Ueki, President and Vice-President of Tohoku University, respectively, led a delegation of 20 members of their staff and faculty to attend the ceremony. Leaders from USTB who attended the opening ceremony included: Chancellor Luo Weidong, President Xu Jinwu, Vice-Presidents Xie Jianxin, Zhang Yue and Sun Dongbai, and Assistants to the President Zhu Hongmin and Huang Weijiu. In the audience were approximately 150 teachers and students from USTB.

Prof. Luo hosted the Opening Ceremony and Prof. Xu delivered the welcoming speech. In his speech, Prof Xu mentioned that TU has been one of USTB’s most reliable associates throughout the past decade. With the coming of the 10th anniversary of the partnership between the two universities the “Tohoku University Day at USTB” served as an excellent occasion to celebrate the storied past and bright future of academic and scientific exchange between the two schools. Prof. Susumu Satomi delivered the opening speech for TU, noting that the long-standing cooperation between USTB and TU has served as a great platform for mutually beneficial activities such as the inter-university exchanges of school leaders, scholars and students. He said that he looked forward to the expanding of cooperative efforts and projects between USTB and TU, and expressed his gratitude for the efforts that USTB devoted to putting together the event.

At the conclusion of the speeches, Prof. Xu and Prof. Susumu Satomi signed a cooperative agreement between USTB and TU. Following the signing of the agreement, Prof. Ueki Toshiya and his assistant Prof. Masahiro Yamaguchi gave the audience an introduction of the admission requirements for TU. Mr. Bai Hao, a professor, and Mr. Liu Jiang, a student, from the School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering, then shared with the audience their personal experiences of studying at TU.

In the afternoon a photo exhibition, seminars and academic information on TU were presented. USTB and TU both demonstrated their achievements in the training of bright scholars, scientific research, dedication to community service and pursuit of innovation. The event served to further open doors for mutual learning, better understanding, and deeper, broader cooperation between the two universities in the future.
